Production of functional films in the roll-to-roll process

With the innovative sharkskin technology, BASF, together with Lufthansa Technik, is helping airlines achieve their sustainability goals and make aviation a little more environmentally friendly.
The functional surface film NovaFlex SharkSkin is produced in a roll-to-roll process.
In this process, a film is given structure around 50 micrometers in size – the so-called riblets – in a special process. These imitate the properties of a shark’s skin and thus optimize the aerodynamics at flow-relevant pars of an aircraft.
In the further course of production, the functional film is prepared for easy application and handling, as well as uncomplicated repairability. The individual production steps are carefully checked to ensure the highest level of quality.
