White biotechnology uses natural synthesis techniques to develop and manufacture vitamins, food and feed supplements, pharmaceutical and agricultural intermediates and other product groups.
These techniques can increase efficiency and reduce raw materials, energy requirements and carbon emissions compared to conventional chemical processes. In some cases, white biotechnology has enabled the efficient production of substances that would be impossible (or extremely expensive) to produce using conventional chemical synthesis.
